Circular Saw You can cut laminate plank material down exactly like hardwood flooring by using a circular saw along the length of a piece and with a power miter saw for cutting off the ends. Use a carbide-tipped blade rated for use with laminate material; wood blades will not work with laminate material and will only cut a few pieces before they dull out completely. Most laminate planks normally have a top layer consisting of aluminum oxide impregnated melamine. This hard and abrasive material, the same included in sandpaper, will quickly wear down any blades used to cut it. Do not waste your money on expensive “laminate cutting blades.” Instead, get the cheapest available and expect to go through a blade every few hundred square feet of cutting.

Vinyl tile cutting boards will also cut laminate tile material, since vinyl and laminate are similar. The blade on the tool is essentially a large razor blade installed on a board that has a leverage bar attached. When pulled or pushed, this lever presses the blade down, forcing it to cut through the laminate tile. The cutting board can only be used for straight cuts that either cut a tile parallel to the edges or on a diagonal straight across.

The main issue when cutting laminate flooring isn’t the type of saw you use but the type of blade. Any saw that cuts wood will cut laminate, but to avoid chipping the hard plastic surface, the blade should have the the maximum number of teeth available.

Laminate flooring material is one of the preferred types sold in home improvement stores for the DIY generation. It is easy to install and cut, but there are some differences depending on what type of laminate material you choose. For example, laminate planks are not cut the same way as laminate tiles, and sheet laminate and self-adhering flexible laminate have their own methods of cutting and installation as well.

You can make straight cuts with a circular saw, a table saw or a chop saw. A blade with a tooth count of 100 or more is best, and to reduce chipping, its leading edge always should contact the face of the board. When cutting with a circular saw, this means turning the board over and cutting from the back. When cutting with a table saw or chop saw, however, the board should be face-up.
