Marcus FillionI personally love the garage doors in the first picture. I think the little windows along the top are a nice touch. After reading about all these people who were able to completely transform their garages, I’m more determined to make mine look nice.Rose HendersonWait, are all of these rooms made from garages? I’m not sure how much I like that idea. I feel like that would dramatically lower the value of your house. What the people did with the space is pretty impressive though. I like how the first makeover still has the roller doors on the side.Jack MooreWow, I really like those! I never use my garage for anything but storage, so I’ve been looking for some other way to utilize the space. I may just have to look in to that home office idea. Especially if I installed a sliding glass door like in the picture; I would get a LOT of natural light.Paul LangleyWow, these are some really impressive garage renovations! If the garage has become more of a storage spot for odds and ends, and less about keeping the car from the elements, turning it into a living space is a smart alternative. Once a plan has been formulated, it is time to begin construction. Replace or block up the old garage door opening first. This will keep the space warmer and make it easier to complete the construction of the bedroom’s interior. If adding insulation, make sure that the outside walls are especially well insulated. Most garages are not built with a great deal of it, so for homes in cooler climates, it is especially important to add insulation to the space. The type of insulation you use will be determined by the existing build of your garage and your personal preference.

This garage remodel was part of a much larger historic renovation where the original house had been added to over time. In dire need of an overhaul, the core of the home remained beautiful with wide pine floors and plaster walls. “A critical requirement of the project was to preserve the integrity of the historic structure while giving the new owners additional space for their growing family and friends.”  Without having seen so in the past, one might never have imagined that where this refined, comfortable family room now sits, was once a bare bones garage, complete with a concrete floor and metal lolly columns down the center. Once a tiny, junk-filled garage, this delightful kitchen in Washington, D.C. overlooks a beautiful backyard and patio, allowing natural light and nature to flow in and fill the room. The conversion, performed by Thomas Ahmann of Ahmann Architects was quite challenging as the garage’s original floor plan was extremely narrow. The L-shaped kitchen was divided into distinct areas while maintaining a unified feel. A workspace, mudroom, lounge, and a breakfast bar were integrated into the design. Despite the narrow space, there’s still plenty of room to cook and move around freely. A built-in hutch with desk space was installed at the far end of the kitchen, right against the mudroom area which is accessed through the home’s driveway. That location encourages everyone to remove their shoes, hang up coats and deposit their bags before entering into the kitchen area. At the end of the island sits a breakfast table constructed from reclaimed wood. Placement of the table there was crucial to create uninterrupted flow from the front to the back of the room.
